Independent Reading Post # 3- Due by Friday 12/14 9th period

For this post, you will be able to write anything you want about your book!
Is something the author is doing making you CRAZY?
(For instance, in the book Eat, Pray, Love I couldn't stand the whiny protagonist!)

Do you wish you could learn more about a character that seems insignificant, but intrigues you?
(In my daughter's favorite book- The Scarecrow Dance, there is a little boy who lives in the home that the scarecrow "guards" and she is always asking me questions about the boy that the author doesn't answer.)

Is there a cliffhanger you REALLY want the answer to?

Your post must be at least 5 sentences, thorough and thoughtful in order to get full credit!

  1. In my book "Not That Kind Of Girl" one of the main characters, Autumn, went through a hurtful experience that really made an impact on her high school social life. The author manages to draw out the situation, but retains the infromation on why the student body refers to her as the name of "Fish Sticks." Have you ever watched a movie on tv and it go's on commercial as soon as the exciting part comes on? Don't you hate that? Well, the author is doing this in the book, constantly brings up the situation, but never really explains what happened. I wish the author would explain from the point of view of Autumn why she is called this name.

    1. I agree (: You're author is leaving out a lot and that must be confusing >_<

    3. Can I just say you should take the title of the book and use that to infer what the author means by "fish sticks."

  2. In my book, "In the Time of the Butterflies", Minerva, the oldest sister of the four girls, has learned of her father's affairs. It took me a while to understand who the children who ran out to the car had been, now identified as his love children. They hadn't lived too far from the home of their father, yet his mistress had always been hidden from his wife. Though I have wondered many a time why his wife hadn't defended herself, I'd like to know what caused her to grow so quiet. She remained quiet despite everything, praying to the Virgin Mary for guidance. It was implied that she had known of an affair, yet she had always remained quiet, out of sight and out of mind. She loved her husband, despite what he had been doing during the great expanse of time they shared together. I would like to hear her story, as everyone describes her as quiet, never taking her own stand. She seems scared, yet so strong as well. Her character intrigues me. How had she managed to remain so together despite all the hardships she faced? Her grandson had died, her children left, and yet every evening her husband would be gone, "visiting" with his love children and his mistress. I want to listen to her speak, know her story, and understand her actions.

    1. I personally would have stopped reading the book because I would have been that confused.

  3. In my book "Nothing Special" the author has the main character writing to a mystery girl Aleah. He never mentioned the relationship between them or even how they know each other. It is confusing not knowing why he spends his time writing and expressing himself to this girl. It would be nice to know her point of view certain situations also. The author leaves a couple of events in the dark that he never fully describes and explains what happened. The author is confusing at times but I guess that's the fun in finding out the ending.

  4. In "Sorta Like a Rock Star" Amber lives through a lot of hardship but she still has amazing friends and achieves all her goals despite difficulties. In short, Amber Appleton is a Mary-Sue. The author came up with a character that had a mother in many abusive relationships and is a severe alcoholic. It catches me as very surprising that Amber is a "good girl" and despite everything she partakes in no self damaging behavior. Also, Amber is somehow a great student even though not once in the book is there a mention of an allotted time for homework or studying. Lastly, everyone, absolutely everyone in the book likes Amber. Those that didn't like her to begin with like her in the end because it's just wrong to not like Amber. This book strikes me as very unrealistic and because of this I don't recommend it to anyone interested in realistic fiction.

  5. In my book "Half Brother" by Kenneth Oppel, I like how the book is in Ben's perspective. Throughout the book I can picture everything Ben does and he is sometimes also funny. I can also relate to Ben in many ways because Ben just started the 9th grade and is trying to fit in. I also love that I'm learning about what it takes to be a good scientist working with monkeys. Ben has become so attached to Zan(the monkey) that throughout the book, you feel the same way that Zan is just like a brother unlike Bens dad who sees him as a Specimen. Ben and his dad disagree a lot and I feel bad that they can't keep Zan anymore because everyone at the university has given up on the experiment. This book is such an enjoyable book to read. This is what I like about this book.

  6. In my book "Rot & Ruin" the author is leading me up to the climax. He is introducing Benny Imura, the main character, to the Lost Girl, a 16 year old girl who lives in the destroyed part of the world.
I wish I could learn more about Benny's parents and his relationship with his older brother, Tom. The author vaguely describes how Benny's parents died and how the relationship between him and his brother was negatively tainted. Overall the book is good so far and I'm anxious to know more about the Lost Girl and Benny's job killing zombies.
(And this font change was a surprise to me, it was like BAM.)

    1. That is really weird. Why did the author choose to introduce the main character near the climax? What was the beginning of the book even about? I've never read a book like that.

(Writing the word "BAM" doesn't have the same effect as saying it.)

  7. In my book "The Alchemist", the main character Santiago takes a lot of risks. One night he had a weird dream, so he goes to a gypsy so that she could interpret it for him. She says that he will go to Egypt to find a treasure. Just because of that, Santiago has sold all of his sheep so he would have enough money to travel to Egypt. However, all he knows about the treasure is that it is near the pyramids. I know for a fact that if a gypsy told me to go to Egypt to find a treasure, I wouldn't take the risk. But that is what makes Santiago so intriguing.

  8. In the book "The Heart is Not a Size" I like how the girls have different perspectives. They both talk about their family, and in one part of the book Riley's mom was the one that was being talked about. They author was saying that Riley's mom was a bit stuck up because she was rich. Riley's best friend had to hear some of the argument her mom and dad had. Riley's best friend Juarez was a bit jealous of Riley because Riley had the most expensive stuff that you could ever think about.

  9. In my book "How to Save a Life" I dislike the fact that the author makes one character more interesting then the other. So since my books written in sections im like tempted to just go to the section with the more interestiing character. But then it would make no sense because the two are linked. Anyways I think that if the author stopped "beating around the bush" and just explained more about what happened with the character. I wouldn't like one character more then the other.

  10. In the book I am reading, "Why We Broke Up", I really enjoy the way the author has captured what a teenage "relationship" is like. You can tell that this girl , Min, really fell for this guy, Ed, over a time period of only a month and a half! She really thought that her and Ed would be together for the rest of their lives, happily ever after, the whole nine yards. That's obviously not how it worked out, and now you get to see Min go through and handle her heartbreak. She ends up doing what a lot of girls do, being dramatic about it, with this long note and box full of things Ed got her, then leaving it on his front porch. To me, this book is really relatable for any teenager, boy or girl.
Another quick thing I like about this book would be the main characters, Min and Ed. Min is a quiet, aspiring film maker while Ed is the high school basketball team star. They're completely opposite people with completely opposite groups of friends and Min learns that to be with Ed, she has to learn to get along with his friends and give up her own. This is something a lot of people can relate to because sometimes two really different people like each other and that's exactly what happens. So, I guess I like the fact that this book isn't like most other books where the couple was two people who were absolutely perfect for each other, never fought, always laughed and got along, because relationships aren't always like that in the real world anyway.

  11. In my book "If i Stay" the author has many ways of describing how scared the main character is. I like the fact that the author shows emotions and how the main character is living outside of her own body, although she is invisable to everyone else around her. I wish I could learn more about how the Mias boyfriend Adam feels. He plays a big part in the book , but im still clueless on how some one like Adam is dating Mia. I wish the author would have explained more of Adams feelings towards Mia in the book.I would like to learn more about what happens after Mia rejoins her body.I finihsed my book and it left me wondering if Mia dies or if she stays.I would love to read another series to the book because in my book Mias family is encountered with a terrible tradegy and leaves Mia having to make her own disscions about her life. -Noelle Rodriguez

  12. There are characters I would love to learn more about in my book "Faking Faith." Like for example, Dylan's ex best friends. The two girls who left her when she made a mistake; one seeming so angry and done with her, yet the other one who has mixed emotions. Will they start talking again? Dylan is going through so much, they can't just leave her like that, right? The girl with mixed emotions left her as well, but I wonder if she will make an effort to talk to Dylan knowing how much her life has fallen apart. She gives Dylan "wounded animal looks" but won't go say anything. I want them to be friends again. It bothers me how they can just leave her like that, she made a mistake. Friends are supposed to help each other through that, not leave them to fend for themeselves. It drives me crazy.

  16. Something I really like about this book is Tiny Cooper. The book, although it is called "Will Grayson, Will Grayson", is basically about him. This books should've been called "The Adventures of Two Wills and the Utterly Fabulous Tiny Cooper", although that's a bit long for a title. Anyway, Tiny's great. He tries to help other people, and even though he's frustrated when they don't notice, he never gives up. That's what I like best about Tiny-his perserverance. He also doesn't give up with his musical (written by, directed by, casted by, and starring himself) even when things go wrong and everyone seems to forget about him. Both of the Wills have a fall out with him, each over different things, but in the end the two Wills pull through for Tiny. (I was glad they did that, too.)

  17. In my book I can't stand the way the authors explain something about the characters in ways I can't understand. For example Honoria knows White Fox was raised by Native Americans because he walks toe-heel. It took me a while, but after they explained that she meant she has Native American boots. They do this throughtout the book and I hate how I have to think so I can get what they are saying. Well the books is becoming a little boring, but hopefully i'll get better.

  18. In my book "Send" I would really like to know why the main character Daniel talks to a 13 year old version of himself. Daniel talks to him on a daily basis. The younger version of Daniel is named Kenny which was the main character's name before he changed it to Daniel. I'm guessing that he talks to Kenny because he is trying to forgive himself for what he had done at the age of 13. He is a bully who is just trying to start over.

  19. In my book it annoys me that everyone thinks so negatively of the main character. Crazy things has happened to her through her life and everyone thinks she's to blame. They make fun of her and tease her but she doesn't pay any mind which i like about that character. The one character I would like to learn more about is her mother. It talks in the book about how damaged she is from many traumatic experiences she's put her mother through but it ever explains what happened. Her mother thinks her daughter is crazy as well because she can't believ the things that's happened to her were on accident (like getting a nail lodged in her brain) eveb though it's her "shadow" or ghost in her soul controling these things. Her mom is very strict and riged and i'd really like to know why.

    1. it seems like this is the case in a lot of books I've read as well. it probably has something to do with the way the plot is developed.

  20. In the book "jump" one thing that i want to question or know more about is if the main character is actually insane. In the book it talks about her coming home from an insane asylum and taking medication. the thing that i don't understand however is that she seems like a normal person. she doesn't have unusual thoughts or tendencies. although i wont know for sure until the end of the book.
